"I want to be known as an actor"

August 9, 2006
Back-to-back-films

Everything about Amma Cheppindi made me sign the film - the banner, director, character and subject. There wasn't one minus point. It was challenging and tough to get the role of Bose. The character I play is 22 years old, but mentally around 8. He talks, walks and behaves like an 8-year old. The film revolves around the relationship he shares with his mother. I did two months of research (the kind of research I did is a secret) to essay the character, and read the script 10 times before I began shooting. Playing the character did not drain me, I was very happy doing it. I never felt it was tough, possibly because of the homework I did. It will be one of the best roles in my body of work.

Suhasini (who plays Bose's mother) is one of the best actresses in the industry. Shooting with her was superb. I had a lot of fun and she encouraged me a lot. The good comfort level between us ensured I gave more than 200 per cent to the role. I was happy when she said, at the audio release, that she was happy to act with an actor. That touched me. There were no attitude problems on the sets; the unit was like a family. We all ate and chatted together. Sriya, my co-star, is now one of my close friends.

Veedhi, my other film, is a commercial one where I have the superhero image - I sing, fight, dance and indulge in comedy. It is being produced by Usha Kiron Movies after a gap of two and a half years. I hadn't done comedy before, therefore it was difficult in the beginning until I found my sense of timing. The character was in total contrast to the one in Amma Cheppindi.
