Ek, Do, Teen...
Bollywood's extra-marital affairs

August 9, 2006
The Neurotic Other Woman

A devoted housewife. Her spineless husband. And a batty other woman.

In Mahesh Bhatt's honest and moving Arth (left), disloyalty comes like an unexpected punch. Here's a wife (Shabana Azmi) desperately trying to get her marriage back, reeling in depression and ultimately resolving to start afresh.

While Azmi makes a graceful exit, the neurotic, insecure other woman (Smita Patil) stands out starkly. The husband merely acts as a catalyst to bring about the dignity in one and the anxiety in another.

Vikram Bhatt treaded the same path, to an unexciting effect, in his reportedly autobiographical, Ankahee by creating a suicidal character for Esha Deol.

The newly married Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh struggle to stay afloat after Kapoor finds himself intensely infatuated by a fascinating Raakhee in Doosra Aadmi. Though better sense prevails in the 'older other woman' before more damage is done.

Interestingly, in these films, the intense 'Woh' won major critical applause.
