The technical awards also went to Devdas. In addition, Mumbai-based designer Neeta Lulla was adjudged best costume designer for Devdas. Lulla told rediff.com that she designed all the costumes for the film, except those of Madhuri Dixit, over a period of two years. Dixit's costumes were designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.

Adding to the glamour of the evening was the venue -- the Trump Taj Mahal casino -- which saw an infusion of Indian Americans at the tables and slot machines both during and after the awards.

Significantly, a strong political message also came out of the awards ceremony when Congressman Frank Pallone, while receiving a special award, called for closer ties and dialogue between India and Pakistan.
