1964
A glossy love story involving three childhood friends. The men are in love with the woman, who returns the affections of only one. The story ends with one man sacrificing his love for the other.
Sepia
The trend for love triangles is set. Sangam was also one of the early films that used Europe as a romantic backdrop. The hackneyed plot grosses over Rs 20 million. It is difficult to tell whether it is the story or the exotic location that worked the magic. The cliché does what clichés do best -- spawn more imitations.
Uncut
Raj Kapoor excels in imitating Charles Chaplin. He does not just imitate, he Indianises the loveable tramp. Like Chaplin, Raj Kapoor also lends a socialist flavour to his cinema. Naturally, he is very popular in the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, his magnum opus, Mera Naam Joker, takes nine years to make and bankrupts him when it bombs.
