Eating out: The wayside story

Pooja Sharma guides you to some takeaway joints for home-made style food in Mumbai.

My first exposure to women-run food stalls was at the Free Press Marg at Nariman Point. This was years ago. It was fascinating to see women running a typical Jhunka Bhakar stall. Even more fascinating was the stuff they dished out -- steaming hot Idlis, Batata Poha, Sabudana Khichdi and Batata Vada.

One could stop by and enjoy a nice breakfast or evening snack with a cup of hot chai. Sounds good, nuh! They also served hot Chapattis, rice and Subzis during lunchtime. To say that business was brisk here would surely be an understatement. Not only was it the closest one could get to home-made food, but it was also very light on the pocket.
