What do you think of four Fashion Weeks this year? Is it a benefit or drawback? On a personal level, is it an advantage for you?
My concern is that so far, fashion has always been a niche market, and the balance of demand and supply is a delicate one. Now, with these multiple Fashion Weeks, the supply has increased many-fold, but I'm not so sure about the demand. The fact is that things are going to change -- I'm not sure whether that will be for the better or worse, but they're sure to change. I guess it depends largely on the quality of work.
Why do you think plus sizes are not showcased on the Indian ramp as they are abroad?
If you saw my show today, the thing that would strike you would be the fits. I always use very relaxed fits and easy fluid shapes. I'm aiming at interpreting the female form in all its shapes and sizes. My outfits would go as well on a plus-size woman as they would on a stick-thin one. In fact, I received feedback after my show that the clothes on the ramp were clothes that the audience would be able to carry off as well.
Also, there are so many female designers these days, as opposed to earlier, when it was a man's domain. And female designers are much more sensitive to different shapes and imperfections in other women.
Do you think we take size zero too seriously while the rest of the world is opening up to curvier figures?
I don't think so. In fact, in India, we are far more sympathetic to imperfections in women's bodies. Look at the sari for instance. It's perfect for all shapes and sizes. Can you imagine how unforgiving western clothes would be on our mothers? In India we provide the option of the sari, which can be dignified, glamourous or sexy, depending on the style and occassion.
Why have you chosen to showcase your collection at this Fashion Week, since you now have a choice?
This is my second season at Lakme. I have always been satisfied, so it's only natural that I would come back here, instead of trying to re-align myself elsewhare.
Do you think the global financial crisis will affect the fashion industry?
Well, I do a lot of international work; in fact my main market is export. So yes, I am very very worried. It's going to affect me personally. We don't yet know how bad things will be in India, but with the kind of work I do, yes, I am concerned.
What do you think are the trends for the next season?
There are going to be lots of sheer fabrics -- cottons, chiffons, organzas, etc. We are also going to see layering and fluid shapes.
