Uday Kuckian
Designer Speak: Sudhir and Tapash

What do you think of four Fashion Weeks this year? Is it a benefit or drawback? On a personal level, is it an advantage for you?
We don't look at it as a problem at all. All designers have their own individual style and so far there have been no clashes. India has such a huge population that there is certainly enough business for everyone. And it's growing each year. In fact, we expect orders to start coming in from tomorrow onwards.

Why do you think plus sizes are not showcased on the Indian ramp as they are abroad? Does India take size zero too seriously?
The models are not the important thing in a fashion show. The clothes are. The models should appear as hangers and nothing else. Abroad, plus size models are accepted more than they are here, but then again, by how much?

The size zero fixation is a concern in India -- the models are too competitive, they don't eat, they're stressed all the time...

Why have you opted to showcase at this Fashion Week, now that you have a choice?
We started with Lakme and have had a good experience here. We were in the Emerging Designers' Category last year so it was convenient to come back. Also, we feel that Mumbai is where the market for our clothes lies. We know the stores here and feel comfortable with the set-up here.

How do you think the global financial crisis will affect the fashion industry?
Well, we aren't worried about that at all. It's a niche market that we cater to, and for the rich class, the recession won't matter. Our clients are unlikely to be affected by it.

What do you think are the trends for the next season?
Lots of colours. And comfort. It's going to be a colourful spring.
