'Losing weight takes discipline'

August 2, 2007
Reader Kannan shares how he went from 125 kilos to 92 in less than five months:

I have lived two lives. The first life was when I was happy-go-lucky, nothing in the world ever bothered me, not even my obese structure! Life was undisciplined and I used to eat anything and everything I could lay my hands on. No wonder that I could never fit into a jeans or a decent T-shirt.

Things then changed. In January 2006 at 125 kilos, I was challenged by "someone" very close to lose weight. For the first time in my life, it hurt me. Very hard. I then started a schedule which would go on to change my life forever.

Exercise:
I jogged for an hour and walked for two hours everyday. To beat the enormous stress on the body, I had to alternate between the two. I first jogged for 15 minutes, then walked for half an hour, then jogged again, and then walked again. I used to hit the roads for 3 hours everyday, non-stop!

I was lucky that my office was equipped with a world-class gym. I did the treadmill and other "carbo" heavy exercises for around 2 hours everyday. I had a great instructor and he kept pushing me everyday. Never did I lift any weights. The sole criterion in gym was to shed flab, nothing else!

Diet
I had a plate of fruits in the afternoon and whenever hungry. Most of the days, even my dinner would be just fruits. Watermelons, to be specific.
Strictly no coffee, no tea, no cold drinks, no rice, no sugar and no oil during those three months.
I used to drink bottles and bottles of water. Approximately 6-8 litres everyday.

Results
1. Lost more than 30 kilos in 3 months flat
2. Started to look a lot younger
3. Bought the first jeans of my life -- waist size: 36 inches

Warning
I must warn you though, that I was in an ultra high state of motivation during that period. My exercise regime was very painful. My feet used to bleed sometimes with so much running. My diet was crazy, went almost hungry for 3 months. But hey, it worked for me !

Advice
I have lived through the horrors of being obese. Let me tell you something. There is only one sure-shot way of losing extra weight. It is discipline, discipline and more discipline. If you don't have this, you aren't going anywhere. Be prepared to sweat like a dog and the whole world is yours for the taking!
