'From 120 kg to 90 kg in 6 months'

August 2, 2007
Get Ahead reader Srinivas, a 37-year-old entrepreneur in Dubai, lost a whopping 30 kilos. He shares his story:

I used to weigh 120 kilos, with the waist size of 44 inches exactly 5 years ago (way back in May 2002). That was the time I had started my business in Dubai.

I was running here and there to get the work for our newly established instrumentation company done. One day, I was out with our technician to inspect some of the installations at a job site. I had to get on to a chimney 120 m above the ground. Since it was under construction and there was no lift facility, I went up through the scaffolding ladders. By the time I reached, I was breathless and thirsty. I yelled for some water, but though the problem was fixed immediately, coming down was as difficult because of my weight.

Two hours later, I finally touched solid ground. That's when I made up my mind to shed some weight.

The first thing I did was to enroll myself in a local gym. The trainer instructed me to do cardiovascular exercises 1 hour every day and 7 days a week with mild weights.

He designed a diet programme for me to reduce 5 kilos per month. It took 6 months for me to reach the targeted weight of 90 kilos. Now, I maintaining the weight and my waist size has come down to 36 inches. I can run continuously for 45 minutes at a constant speed of 10 km per hour. Infact, I have even participated in some of the marathon races conducted by charity organisations in Dubai.

For people who are interested in reducing their weight, I advise:

1. Stop eating sweets and junk food.
2. Exercise regularly (you can skip a meal but not the exercise).
3. Set your goal (in weight) and try to achieve it.

Once you get habituated to visiting the gym and working out, you will never skip it, instead you will find you rather enjoy it.
