West Side Story

Written by Arthur Laurents, with music by the legendary Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this musical was originally produced and directed by Jerome Robbins in 1957.

732 performances later, it promptly went on a successful tour.

The theme here is dark, which is one of the reasons for its continual popularity. It was also among the first that dealt with social problems, instead of concentrating on fluffy issues like most other musicals of the time. If you haven't heard some of its tracks like America, Tonight, or I feel pretty, get the Grammy-winning CD!
