Riya Sen
This picture was shot in Mumbai's JW Marriot hotel at the Lounge Bar. It has a mixture of natural and artificial light.
The picture captures Riya in a crazy mood. She's just sitting down, something crazy might have come into her mind and she's cutting her T-shirt!
I had seen a picture in an international web site of this girl with holes in her T-shirt. We added to that, and said that why don't we do a picture where she's actually cutting her T-shirt. That's how we achieved the mood of the picture.
We shot the picture in colour. But I knew I wanted it in black and white. As a photographer, it is your vision. You know which picture should be in colour or black and white.
Riya fits the mood because she is actually cutting her T-shirt. It's not that she's pretending to cut. She really got involved in the cutting.
It's fun shooting with actors because they always emote the photographer's idea. You just have to tell them the mood, and they do the rest.
Riya is a great friend. She doesn't ask questions. She's always ready to experiment. In my 2003 calendar, I shot a picture of her covered with rose petals. She was lying on her back for three hours without moving, while the rose petals were put in the right places. It looked like she was wearing no clothes, only rose petals.
I would do a picture with a model if they were comfortable with it. The state of mind is very important, as it shows in the picture.
