This constituency -- with 122,595 voters comprising 51 per cent males and 49 per cent females -- has this grand distinction of electing a candidate twice only on one occasion (K Mallanna of the Indian National Congress in 1977 and 1980).
According to residents of this constituency, this is only an indication that the voter is clearly upset with every politician who has contested and won the election.
Chitradurga has been a Congress bastion since 1951 with the party winning here 10 times, which includes the 2004 election. Although, since 1980, they have changed the candidate every election, the party still considers it to be its bastion. However, the BJP differs on this and party workers say that they sense a chance this time around.
This explains why L K Advani decided to address a rally at this constituency two weeks ago.
