Bhujbal - Fighting for survival

Peanuts and cotton are the main crops. But scarcity of water affects yields. There's been very little rain in the past three years.

"If the rain gods are kind, we get some water. If it does not rain, Yeola is a nightmare," explains my driver Dattu Bhorsadkar.

Ironically, it's been raining for the past couple of days and many of the dirt tracks are submerged in water.

Will Bhujbal make a difference? With a wry smile, Bhorsadkar says, "People will give him a patient hearing."

Yeola has 170,000 voters -- Marathas account for 80,000, Banjaras 23,000, Muslims 18,000, Malis 18,000 and Dalits 15,000. Bhujbal belongs to the Mali community. Members of the Maratha Mahasangh are out in groups, canvassing for him
