MILLION DOLLAR BABY

Cast: Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman, Jay Baruchel

Director: Clint Eastwood

Written by: Paul Haggis, based on the stories by FX Toole

As a director, Clint Eastwood seems to be gathering increasing acclaim each year. After garnering a bewildering number of plaudits for last year's Mystic River, the director has wowed critics this time around with this tale of a boxing girl.

The film about a young amateur growing into a tough prizefighter, is centred around the performance of Hilary Swank. She has been very appreciated in the role, and her Golden Globe nomination for this film is certainly something she has had to work for.

Boxing is a sport that has dominated cinema, but essentially by metaphor. This film, right up there in terms of gloved authenticity with Raging Bull and Rocky, is a commendable effort about fragile people, unrealistic aspirations, and picking yourself up when you are down.

The sport serves as a backdrop for the human condition, and there is a sadness in Million Dollar Baby that transcends punches and the rigours of training.
