Simone Tata
Tata, chairperson of Trent Ltd, was born and educated in Geneva, Switzerland. Travelling to India as a tourist in 1953, she met Naval H Tata whom she married in 1955 and settled down in Mumbai permanently.
In 1961 she joined the board of Lakme Ltd. Three years later, she was appointed managing director and in 1982 took over as chairman of the cosmetics major.
In 1996, the Tatas sold Lakme to Hindustan Lever. The Tatas decided to use the money that accrued from the Lakme sale to get into India's retail sector. And that was when Trent was created.
Trent, under Tata and her son Noel, established a chain of successful department stores under the brand name, Westside.
