Liverpool came back after a 0-3 deficit in the second half, scoring three goals in the space of six minutes. They then fended off a late charge by Milan in extra time.
Polish goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was the hero of the day as he saved the efforts of Serginho, Andrea Pirlo and Shevchenko as Liverpool went on to beat Milan 3-2 in the shoot-out.
