It seems Portugal, big competitions and penalty shoot-outs just don't go down well with the English.

Even as they came to take their spot-kicks in the quarter-final of the 2006 World Cup, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, great players for their respective clubs, fidgeted, doubted, and expectedly saw goalkeeper Ricardo jump in the way of their shots.
Lampard, Gerrard and Jamie Carragher miseed their spot-kicks as England lost the game 1-3 on penalties.
Inexperience couldn't be used as an excuse here. The all-too-familiar scars of defeat may have done them in.
