Shrinking the 100 metres mark

June 3, 2008

Carl Lewis (9.86 seconds)

Regarded as one of America's best sprinters, Carl Lewis has a rich haul of 10 Olympic gold medals including nine golds. However, one of his most notable achievements was breaking the 100 metres at the 1991 World Championships.

In one of the most thrilling 100 metres races ever, Lewis clocked a world record time with 9.86 seconds in a race that saw six men breast the tape in under ten seconds.

  • Lewis's previous record was the 9.92 seconds, achieved at the 1988 Seoul Olympics after Ben Johnson's timing of 9.79 seconds was disqualified as the Canadian tested positive for stanozolol after the race.
