He set a world record time of 9.90 seconds in June 1991, which was then broken by compatriot Carl Lewis within a month. But Burrell was not to be denied his moment and he set the record for a second time, clocking 9.85 seconds in 1994. His record stood until the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when Donovan Bailey finished in 9.84 seconds.
