Basketball Without Borders
July 9, 2008
Speaking with rediff.com, Elphinston compared the trip to stumbling upon a gold-mine. "There is an unbelievable quantity of untapped potential in India," he said. "There's no doubt: you have outstanding athletes in this country."
He went on to mention three priorities that must be met for Indian basketball to flourish. "First, the government must be more financially supportive, in terms of building courts and ensuring facilities are up to international standards. Second, the coaching structure needs to develop, so that highly trained and highly motivated leaders can teach basketball the right way. Third, the kids have to be exposed to basketball at an early age, and in a professional manner. Basketball is a game of skill, and therefore, the fundamentals must be properly taught and consistently reinforced. There must be competitive leagues that play year round, every week, so that the top players can compete against and challenge one another. When these conditions are met, you'll see India's national team rapidly climb the rankings."
