Basketball Without Borders
July 9, 2008
The campers represented a near perfect cross-section of Asia: Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Uzbekistani, Iranian, Lebanese and more. In total, over 15 Asian nations sent participants; India, China and Iran led the way, with five campers each. Of the five Indians, three were from Uttar Pradesh (Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, 16, Varanasi, Shadab Khan, 16, Agra and Arjun Singh, 16, Varanasi), one from Rajasthan (Pratham Singh, 16) and one from Chhattisgarh (Hirendra Singh, 17).
Aside from Wilkins, former NBA star Sam Perkins and current players Pat Garrity, Ronny Turiaf, Kyle Korver and Linton Johnson volunteered for the trip, and spent the weekend giving instructions and tips on playing basketball professionally. In addition, top NBA and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) assistants, coaches and executives came along to offer insight and to scope out India's basketball infrastructure.
