Samantha Stosur of Australia, the 27th seed, opened her campaign with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jamea Jackson of the USA.
In doing so, she set up a probable meeting with Russia's Maria Kirilenko, who was poised for victory over Italy's Maria Elena Camerin when play was called off for the day at a rain-soaked Roland Garros.
"I've never had a win like that before, especially on clay, and each week I've felt more comfortable out here playing on clay so I think, preparation, this is probably the best I've ever felt," Stosur said.
Only seven matches were completed on Sunday's opening day of the tournament and the same was the case the following day, leaving organisers facing a massive backlog with more rain forecast for Paris this week.
