F1 2007: The Rookies

March 14, 2007

Robert Kubica

Oh, him we're already fans of.

Like all mega racers, this Polish racer started super-young. At 4, he was already putt-putting around in a tiny off roader, and after his wise father bought him a go-kart, he wasn't allowed to race till he was old enough. After he turned 10, there was no looking back. 6 titles and 3 years later, he moved to Italy and became the first outsider to win the International Italian Karting Championship. After a solid career in the Junior Formulas, he became the third driver for BMW Sauber in 2006.

And then came the headache. BMW driver Jacques Villeneuve complained of a headache, and the team jumped at the chance. Then came protests that his head wasn't hurting, but BMW wouldn't listen. Team manager Mario Theissen was aching to give Kuvica a break, and the driver hurtled through, taking a fantabulous 7th place with his debut drive at the Hungarian GP. The car was later disqualified (for being too light) but Kubica was electric, both in qualifying and the race. In his 3rd race, he led the Italian Grand Prix briefly, and finished third, the first Pole to do so.

He stunned us last year, and this year we're rooting for the lad.

Shine, you blindingly fast prodigy, shine.
