Iran were reinstated for the football tournament after the world governing body, Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), decided to temporarily lift a world ban placed on the defending champions.
FIFA had suspended Iran from all international competition, including the Asian Games, on 22 November due to "government interference in football matters and violation of Article 17 of the FIFA Statutes," said a FIFA statement.
However, a temporary exemption had been made to allow the Iranian men's team to participate in Doha 2006.
