He was being hailed as the saviour of English football, till he set foot where no man should in the bitter battle against Portugal in the World Cup.
Rooney has been compared to Pele by former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who answered 'One is black, one is white,' when asked to compare Rooney and the legendary Brazilian.
And the 20-year-old Rooney definitely has the most-discussed metatarsal in contemporary sport.
