Nalbandian's temperament again came into question as he let Federer level the set and then serve for the match at 6-5.
But a dubious ace call from the chair umpire seemed to have spurred on the Argentine, as he won the game from 0-30 down and set up a last set tie-break.
Nalbandian was in control of the tie-break throughout, breaking on first point off Federer's serve. The Swiss was finidng it difficult to get the first serves in and Nalbandian produced winners on the shaky serve to win the tie-break 7-3.
The eighth seed threw his hands in air and slumped to the ground to celebrate his victory.
