Federer conceded the fourth set, saving his energy for the final burst in the last set. The champion was not done yet.
Only defeat from two sets up would be more painful than the hurting ankle. Federer picked up Nalbandian's lack of self-belief and fought back from 0-4 down in the fifth set to level it 4-4.
