Czech player Radek Stepanek defeated number one Asian player Paradorn Srichaphan 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
The red dirt is not Srichaphan's favourite surface and despite winning the struggle in the first set, the 16th seeded Stepanek wiped of the Thai in the next three sets.
Stepanek will meet local hope Florent Serra next.
