1998 champion Carlos Moya beat fellow-Spaniard Alberto Martin 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to open his 2005 campaign.
Martin gave Moya a tough fight in the game that lasted well over two hours. But once Moya had stamped his authority in the third set, the former faded out.
The 14th seed now faces Robin Vik of the Czech Republic in the second round.
