Argentine fourth seed Gaudio dominated the first set but grew more and more frustrated as Rochus levelled the match with a break at 6-5 in the second and the 26-year-old Belgian was always on top in the decider.

The defeat would have dealt a moral blow to Gaudio, who defends his Roland Garros title in less than two weeks' time.
