More US support for India's UN seat demand

India's campaign for a permanent seat in the United Nations is gaining momentum in the United States with the House of Representatives introducing a resolution supporting the demand.
The resolution, introduced by Frank Pallone (Democrat) on Friday, has the backing of 14 other congressmen, including House Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Benjamin Gillian (Republican).
Though the Clinton administration would not be bound by the resolution even if it is passed by the House, observers feel the development would help India lobby support for its demand.
According to a state department official, the US is aware of India's case in this regard, despite the fact that Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral did not raise the issue during his recent meeting with President Bill Clinton.
