Suspected Bangladeshi child-smugglers arrested in Madras

The Tamil Nadu police on Wednesday took into custody a large group of Bangladeshi nationals on suspicion of smuggling children to a Gulf country to use them in camel races there.

The 70-member group included 38 children, all below the age of six.

The police said the Bangladeshis were roaming about in a suspicious manner in Kelambakkam on the city outskirts. The police had immediately taken them into custody, and the interrogation was on.

While some of them claimed they were on their way to visit Ajmer in Rajasthan, police suspect they had crossed over to smuggle the children to the Gulf.

Only seven of the 70 had valid passports.
