Mayawati presides over last cabinet meeting

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday presided over the last meeting, of her cabinet, and before extending thanks to her cabinet colleagues, she created three more districts and seven new tehsils (subdistricts).

With Wednesday' decision, the number of districts in Uttar Pradesh has gone up to 83. She created 15 new districts in the short span of six months of her tenure.

As per the agreement between the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, BSP Vice-President will resign to enable a BJP chief minister. Kalyan Singh takes over the reins of power on September 21.

In reply to a question, an official spokesman clarified that the Wednesday's meeting was of the cabinet and not of the council of ministers.

The three new districts created by the cabinet on Wednesday are Oraiyya, Kannauj, and Rudra Prayag.

Oraiyya district has been created by carving out Defence Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's home district of Etawah while Kannauj will take out the areas of Farrukhabad and Kanpur Nagar districts. Kannauj is known for its perfume industry. The third district will come into existence carving out an area of Chamoli district, increasing the total number of districts in the hill region to 12.
