Army and police shouldn't act like terrorists: Justice Venkatachaliah

National Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice M N Venkatachaliah on Saturday said armymen and security personnel should not act as terrorists while fighting terrorism.

Addressing the media at the conclusion of the second Asia-Pacific regional workshop of national human rights institutions, Justice Venkatachaliah said defence and the security personnel must function within the legal ambit to eliminate terrorists.

He also released the three-day workshop's recommendations listing ways and means of strengthening the human rights institutions. The workshop also called upon all countries to combat children's sexual exploitation.

Justice Venkatachaliah said the workshop did not discuss human rights violations in Afghanistan.

The workshop also called upon governments to display the requisite political will so that the national human rights institutions could discharge their responsibilities effectively.
