Noisy scenes in Rajasthan assembly over rape of student

The Rajasthan legislative assembly on Tuesday witnessed noisy scenes for the second successive day as agitated Opposition members stalled question hour for 30 minutes. They were pressing for the suspension of question hour to take up the issue of the alleged gang rape of a girl at the Rajasthan University hostel in Jaipur last week.

As soon as the House assembled at 11 am, several Opposition members were on their feet demanding suspension of question hour and to take up the debate on the rape immediately. Irrigation Minister Devi Singh Bhati and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party member Paoakram Singh also supported the Opposition demand for the suspension of question hour.

The irrigation minister termed the incident as "shameful", and said that discussion of the issue in the House, rather than damage the government's image, would discourage miscreants from committing such crimes in future while instilling confidence in the people.
