VHP opposes queen's visit

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Thursday opposed Queen Elizabeth's proposed visit to India.

VHP president Ashok Singhal said the 1ueen cannot visit India when the country is celebrating the golden jubilee year of its Independence. ''She can come any other time, but not when we are remembering our freedom heroes who had fought against British tyranny,'' he said.

However, if the 1ueen visits India, she should apologise to the Indian people for the British atrocities against Indian people, he said.

Asked if the VHP had planned any demonstrations if the queen ignores its suggestion and visits India, Singhal declined to comment. ''We are already demonstrating by telling the media about it.''

Criticising Congress president ''Kesri Sita Ram'' for apologising to the Muslims for the Babri Masjid demolition, Singhal said the former was not only insulting his party but the entire Hindu population of the country. ''Even calling it Babri Masjid is contempt of court. Puja is held there according to court orders and even the government white paper describes it as a disputed structure.''
