'EC order on criminals cannot be implemented'

Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma said on Tuesday that the Election Commission's directive debarring convicted people from contesting elections cannot be implemented unless the Constitution and the People's Representation Act are amended.

Addressing the media, Sangma said every one was against criminalisation of politics. ''But legislation alone will not be able to implement it,'' he said. ''Political parties should not give tickets to criminals and associate them with with any type of campaigning.''
