Seven killed in Manipur violence

Seven people, including five extremists, were killed and nine arrested by the security forces since Sunday in different parts of Manipur, police sources said.

Five persons, suspected to be extremists, were killed in an encounter with the Assam Rifles personnel at Thoudam village, about 10 km west of the Thoubal police station in Thoubal district. The deceased have yet to be identified.

The security forces recovered one 9 mm pistol, one revolver, three hand grenades, some ammunition and incriminating documents from the deceased, sources said.

After a tip-off, the security forces raided Thoudam village early on Monday morning. Fired at, they retaliated, killing five suspected valley militants were killed, the sources said. No security personnel was reported killed.
