President urged to protect Christians from violence
The Catholic Bishops Conference of India has urged President K R Narayanan to intervene and ensure the
security of the Christian community in Bihar following the gruesome
incident of a priest being beheaded in Hazaribagh.
The decapitated body of Father A T Thomas was found 20 kilometres away
from Hazaribagh in a jungle on Sunday, three days after he was
reported missing.
The priest's murder has shocked the Christian community
which is yet to recover from the Dumka incident wherein a priest was paraded naked, the Conference said in a letter to the
President.
The brutal killing took place against the backdrop of continuing
violence against priests and Christian leaders in the state. Two priests
were killed and some others injured
at Gumla, in south Bihar, on September 2 last year.
The Conference requested the President to take urgent
steps in the state to restore the confidence and security of
their community members.
