AP CM favours Presidential form of govt

United Front convener and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday called for a nation-wide debate on the Presidential form of government, saying that only such a system of governance will provide political stability.

Referring to the frequent political instability in the states and at the Centre, Naidu said only the Presidential form of government could provide political stability.

Addressing a Telugu Desam Party meeting, Naidu assailed the Bharatiya Janata Party for engineering defections and splitting the Congress, the Janata Dal and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh to remain in power. The Kalyan Singh government should have sought a fresh mandate instead of adopting questionable methods, he added. Naidu, however, opposed the use of Article 356 for dismissing an elected government.
