27 killed as bus plunges into ditch in Assam
At least 27 people, including six minors and 10 women, were killed and 20 injured seriously when an overcrowded bus fell into a roadside ditch at Bordubi in Morigaon district of Assam on Monday evening.
According to an official report, the overcrowded bus had more than 80 passengers. Some of the passengers were travelling on the roof of the bus which was returning from Morigaon to Nagaon. It hit the railing of the wooden bridge and fell 40 feet down into the water, killing 21 people on the spot.
Rescue operations, which started almost immediately, were hampered by darkness. Heavy cranes were brought from Nagaon to retrieve the ill-fated bus.
The bus driver was arrested.
