Nine killed in the valley
Thursday was an eventful day in the Kashmir valley -- it witnessed
nine deaths, an attack on a police station and the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition.
Security forces also captured four militants, including a woman.
Troops averted a major tragedy when they defused a powerful grenade
near a place of worship in the historic Lal Chowk.
At least nine houses and two mosques were gutted in a devastating
fire at Ashai Kocha in the downtown city early on Friday morning.
An official spokesman said militants attacked a police station at Kulgam in Anantnag Thursday evening. The police retaliated, but the militants managed to escape.
In Kupwara district's Handwara, a security personnel was killed when
militants fired on a patrol party.
In another incident in Khanpora, a civilian suffered
bullet wounds in an encounter between militants and security forces.
Militants also fired on a security patrol at village
Danchiwacha in Baramulla district. The forces returned
the fire. In the exchange, one security personnel was killed. The
militants managed to escaped.
Another patrol came under heavy fire at Dhanar in Nowgam Thursday evening. In the fierce encounter that followed one security personnel was
killed. One civilian also died in the shootout. Another was
injured.
According to the spokesman, militants shot dead civilian Abdul Aziz
Dar at Tridgam. They also looted a house in Dhar village Thursday night.
Forces captured two militants from Sopore and another from
Baramulla during overnight operations. In Anantnag's Samathan village, a security patrol killed two militants. Another
militant was gunned down in Kupwara.
On Friday morning, troops killed a militant and
arrested another during a raid on a shop in Bandipora, Baramulla
district. The arms and ammunition recovered included 25
AK- 56 rifles, two guns, 53 magazines 4,496 rounds of ammunition, 30
grenades and 20 kilograms of explosives.
In another operation, troops arrested three militants -- one from Baramulla, another from Srinagar and a third, a woman, from Kazoor in Pulwama district.
