Pak general's volte face on Kashmir
Pakistan army chief General Jehangir Karamat has said the army will abide by the government's decision on all issues, including the offer of a non-aggression treaty with India.
General Karamat said the government's decisions are final, changing his earlier stand that a non-aggression treaty would make no sense unless the Kashmir issue was resolved.
Asked whether he had laid this condition with the government,
he said, ''Certainly not.'' He added that he had only presumed that this was what the government meant while making the offer.
Asked if he was consulted before the offer was made, he said, ''Why should they? The government does not have to confer with us.''
