Delhi HC asks cops not to torture witnesses in Tanwar case

The Delhi high court on Monday directed the police not to torture witnesses in the sensational Dr Surendra Tanwar murder case. Dr Tanwar reportedly had close ties with Congress president Sitaram Kesri.

The court also issued notices to the Delhi police commissioner and the deputy commissioner (crime branch) and another official in this regard. The notices were issued by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajay Prakash Misra and Justice Dalveer Bhandari following two petitions seeking a direction to the police to prevent harassment or torture of witnesses.

The bench said that any interrogation should be carried out at the witnesses's homes.

The notices are returnable by January 20, when the regular matter is listed for hearing.

The petitions were filed by Dheeraj Mudgal and Ram Prakash Sandal.
