CBI incurs court's wrath for 'irrelevant' investigation in Massey case

The Delhi high court on Tuesday questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation's right to question the employer of Martin Massey who was allegedly beaten up by the Delhi police for straying into the prime minister's route.

The court asked why the CBI questioned the employer regarding Massey's leave record and medical condition at a time when the agency's report on the incident was ready.

A division bench consisting of Justices Mahinder Narain and S K Mahajan termed the move as irrelevant. By sending summons to the employer, the agency has given the impression that it is looking into some conspiracy, the court said.

''Leave record and medical report for what? Why and how is it necessary for investigation? His leave record is totally irrelevant. The man strays into the path of PM's motorcade and you want the record about the leave availed by him in 1996,'' the bench observed, asking Additional Solicitor General Abhishek Manu Singvi to explain the CBI's move.

Seeking clarifications from Singvi regarding the queries made by the CBI, the court adjourned the case to August 12.
