Curfew continues in Keshod; bandhs in Saurashtra
Indefinite curfew continues in the
trouble-torn town of Keshod in Junagadh district where
four persons were killed in police firing on Friday while
anti-dalit protests are snowballing in various towns of
Saurashtra region on Saturday in the shape of bandh calls.
Meanwhile, one of the three people injured in the Keshod firing
succumbed to his injuries at the Jamnagar Medical College hospital, raising
the death toll to five, a report from Jamnagar said on Saturday.
Junagadh district observed a complete bandh on Saturday in response to the
bandh call given by the Junagadh Chamber of Commerce and Industries
to protest against the "uncalled for" firing by the police
at Keshod on Friday.
Upleta taluka in Rajkot district, where nine people were injured in
a clash between dalits and non-dalits in Dumiani village
on Thursday, observed a complete bandh on Saturday despite a
warning by Gujarat Chief Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela
to arrest anyone who calls for a bandh.
In Junagadh district, Junagadh city, the port town of Veraval,
the town of Talala which is surrounded by forests, Maliya Hatina, Mendarda,
Vanthli, and most the villages observed a complete bandh
on Saturday.
In Keshod, where indefinite curfew was imposed around
1430 hours on Friday following police firing,
eatables and milk supply has decreased considerably,
resulting in hardships to the common man, a report from Keshod
said.
About 50 people were rounded up in Keshod in connection with
Friday's riots and senior police officers were camping there
for an on-the-spot study of the situation.
Maliya Hatina town in Junagadh district is on an
indefinite bandh since Thursday as a protest against
the violence of dalits on the Gujarat bandh day
on Wednesday, a report from Junagadh said on Saturday.
Morvi town in Rajkot district, where violence broke out on Wednesday, is calm but tense
while tension still prevails in Gandhidham town in Kutch
district which also witnessed violence during the Gujarat
bandh which was called to protest against the desecration of the Ambedkar statue
in Bombay last week.
