2013 Patna serial blasts: HC commutes 4 convicts' death sentence to 30 yrs in jail

The Patna high court on Wednesday commuted the capital punishment awarded to four people convicted in the 2013 serial blasts at Gandhi maidan in Patna to 30 years' imprisonment. The explosions took place at the maidan during an election rally addressed by Narendra Modi, who was then the Gujarat chief minister and BJP's prime ministerial candidate.

Six people were killed and 89 injured in the blasts.

In 2021, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court sentenced four of nine accused in the case to capital punishment, two to life imprisonment, two to a 10-year-jail term and one to seven years in jail.

Later, four who were awarded the death sentence challenged the lower court's order in the Patna high court.

The NIA probe into the incident revealed that the blasts were engineered by the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and a Ranchi module of its new avatar, the Indian Mujahideen.
