Balloons for border surveillance successfully tested

Cameras attached to balloons may improve surveillance on the Indian border without the attendant risks.

The aerostat (tethered balloons that can carry payload) which is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation has already undergone successful experimental trials.

In a multi-laboratory experiment conducted recently, the 95 M3 aerostat was evaluated as a platform for reconnaissance. The results, according to official sources, was gratifying.

A daylight camera payload was successfully flown with the low-weight compact platform stabilised with the help of a low-cost sensor instead of a conventional gyro.

More experiments are planned with 160 m3 aerostat with larger payload capacity.

The development of ''Bliss'' is yet another important application of lighter than air systems.

The sources explained that the curvature of the earth limits view, making elevated platforms that ideally could also overcome physical obstructions necessary. The LTA can be easily and cheaply modified for other military applications.

Budgetary constraints in military spending have resulted in a resurgence of LTA systems in surveillance, communication, missile defence and command and control systems.

LTA systems are also useful during and after natural disasters like cyclones, floods and earthquakes, providing up-to-date information on the situation.
