Tripura hit by power crisis, heat wave

Life in Tripura has been badly affected by a severe power crisis coming on top of a heat wave for the past three days.

Official sources said on Wednesday that the state's two thermal power projects and its hydro-electric power project were generating 40 MW, far below the peak hour demand of 95 MW. Supply of power from the North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation projects in Manipur and Assam were also badly affected due to faulty transmission lines, the sources said.

Two thermal power projects at Baramura in West Tripura have not been functional for the past few years, they said, adding that the giant 84 MW thermal power project at Ramchandra Nagar in West Tripura could not be completed, in the scheduled time as the Gas Authority of India was yet to lay pipelines.

The sources said the water supply, hospital services, telecommunication, newspaper offices and industrial units were all badly hit.

Meanwhile, the heat wave disrupted normal life as the maximum temperature hovered between 35 and 36 degrees celsius in the past three days.
