Taliban slaps curbs on sportspersons

The fundamentalist Taliban regime in Afghanistan has imposed strict restrictions on sportspersons and cheer leaders in the country.

Winning individuals and sides will no longer be cheered by ''hurrah'', but by the cry of ''Allah ho Akbar'' (god is great), according to a Voice of Russia broadcast on Monday.

Henceforth, in swimming competitions, which are open only to men, the swimmers will have to cover their bodies up to the knees. Women, the worst sufferers of the regime's Islamic zeal, are barred from swimming competition, the radio said, quoting reports from Kabul.
